DD n°6: the First Intermediate Period(2050BC)

In 2050 BC, the chaos of the First Intermediate Period comes to an end. Around Atef-Khent, the chiefs of Lower Egypt have gathered in a decentralised state similar to the Old Kingdom of old. In the south, a warrior state was formed around Uaset. At its head was a child who was to become the founder of the Middle Kingdom.

The Lower Egypt of the Xth Dynasty wants to be the worthy heir of Pepi II. A weak administration had to be strengthened, and migrations of Canaanites had begun to take place in their lands for some decades. Because of their link with the Libus, the rulers of Lower Egypt could see them put themselves at their service. It's a race against time that you''ll have. Upper Egypt is far more powerful militarily, economically and administratively. Only the fact that their ruler is a child can give you a few years of preparation to fortify yourself. Centralizing and building forts should give you more time, if not reverse the trend. Once Egypt is re-unified under your rule, it will be time to launch expeditions eastwards to Sinai and Canaan.

Upper Egypt of the XIth Dynasty is powerful. The mines give it wealth and its centralisation is high, unlike its northern neighbour. But Montuhotep II is still a child. He is certainly called upon to reunify the country, but some nobles even speak of overthrowing him. However, the heir to the Antef family had a strong case. With Egypt reunited, you will be led to the Libus, former allies of the Xth Dynasty, and to the mines of Nubia.

But will Egypt ever again reach the heights of glory as in the time of Khufu? The Middle Kingdom showed us that yes and no...
